Effectively shooting a hockey puck is not attributed solely to arm or wrist strength but rather a unique blend of the whole body and weight transfer to produce speed, power, and accuracy. To execute a solid shot, a player must have a combination of skill, technique, and muscular strength.
As aforementioned, the muscles used in hockey shooting extend beyond the upper body and include the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and hip flexors. These muscles work together to generate power and torque when shooting the puck.
Training these muscles to develop explosive power can improve a player’s shot accuracy and increase their scoring potential. By utilizing specific exercises and techniques, players can maximize their hockey shooting potential and take their game to
the next level.
1. Practice proper technique: Focus on proper technique when shooting. This includes using your whole body to generate power, keeping your head up, and following through with your shot.
2. Strengthen your core and legs: The power in your shot comes from your core and legs. To improve your shot incorporate exercises that target your core and legs, such as squats, lunges, and planks, into your training routine.
3. Use a weighted stick: A weighted stick can help build strength and improve your shot accuracy. Start with a lighter weight and gradually increase as you become stronger. GELSTX has become the standard bearer for weighted hockey sticks. They have
scientifically designed their weighted hockey sticks to help athletes become stronger, faster, and gain a competitive edge on the competition. GELSTX are weighted training aids for hockey, lacrosse, and golf. The secret to our game-changing training aids is our STICKGEL technology inside each GELSTX product. STICKGEL is a patented gel polymer that does two things:
Adds weight evenly through the shaft
Does not compromise the flex of the stick
4. Work on your wrist strength: Your wrist strength is important for quick and accurate shots. Use a wrist roller or wrist curls to strengthen your wrists.
5. Practice with a shooting aid: Shooting aids such as a shooting pad or a net target can help improve your shooting accuracy and consistency.
6. Experiment with different sticks: Different sticks have different flex points and blade patterns, which can affect your shot. Try out different sticks and curve patterns to find one that feels comfortable and suits your style of play.
